Summer - Middle School Beginner Band (entering grade 6)

Welcome to Summer Band!

All 5th graders who registered for 6th grade Band at Mahtomedi Middle School (2026-27) are strongly encouraged to take part in this summer opportunity. This camp is also for any students 7th or 8th grade who are starting an instrument for the first time. Students will be learning the beginning basics of their instrument and will be working with a professional musician and teacher on their instrument in instrument-specific sessions. These sessions will be used to prepare your student for playing on their first day of band class. Skills they will learn include, but are not limited to: instrument assembly, proper posture/hand placement, embouchure formation, breath support, warm-up skills, reading notes/rhythms, and instrument care. Students will attend classes with the same instruments, as different instruments require different instruction for many skills. Under the direction of Ashley Olson, MMS Band Teacher
