Join us for our first Accessibility Series: Deaf and Hard of Hearing in our Community

As a business, faith community, organization, or community member, are you wondering how to create an atmosphere where all individuals feel welcome and comfortable? Learn from a panel (see below) about suggestions on how to welcome deaf and hard of hearing individuals into our community/businesses/churches/etc.

Jessalyn Akerman-Frank, M.Edu - Presenter

Jessalyn is the Director of Community and Civic Engagement at Minnesota Commission for the Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing. She is the founder of two non profits, Deaf Equity (www.deafequity.org) and Minnesota Deaf Queers (mndeafqueers.org). Both non-profits serve the Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing community with different projects, services and programming. In her free time she teaches Deaf Yoga and spends time with her family and furbabies.

Lilly Steinbruckner

Lilly graduated from Minnesota North Star Academy (currently Metro Deaf School). She started transitioning from male to female around three years ago and has gone through a lot of intersectional challenges, including disabilities and poverty.

"Advocacy and activism is the most fun part for me. I work hard to make sure Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing receive equal rights. The gift of hope is I believe in Minnesota DDBHH's rights to access information."

Pam Burry

She is a personal chef and sells her famous BBQ sauce. She is a contractor for the Minnesota Commission for the Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing. She volunteers with many organizations, Olmstead Plan, Deaf Equity, Black Deaf Advocates and Minnesota Deaf Queers

Migdalia Roger

“I have been working for MNCDHH as a contractor for 1 ½ years, working as Voter Outreach and voting training and lobbyist workshops. This is my 2nd year doing Voting and Lobby work. I am thrilled to start this project again with our community. I also am a Deaf Mentor, Job Financial Coach, Accountant and Financial Director for Deaf Equity Organization. I enjoy serving our community.”

Jer Loudenback

Jer Loudenback is a native of Washington State and has resided in several states for jobs. Jer retired in 2019 as an ASL teacher and teacher of early childhood education and moved to the Twin Cities. Jer is currently a contractor with the Commission since Nov. 2019 as part of the Civic Engagement team. He been a part of the Deaf Equity Organization since spring.
