Service Learning Days give middle school students the opportunity to learn through meaningful action in their community. These opportunities include hands-on service allowing students to make a difference while learning why their impact matters. Lunch and transportation from the Mahtomedi District Education Center to our destination and back is provided. Friday, November 6th - Students will visit Encore Assisted Living and Memory Care in a hands-on, intergenerational experience centered around connection, creativity, and kindness. By combining direct interaction with continued service work, this experience helps students understand how small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in their community. The day will begin with a visit to Encore, where students will paint pumpkins with the residents! After painting, everyone will gather to enjoy a seasonal fall treat, giving students and residents additional time to connect and build community. Following the visit, students will return to the District Education Center to enjoy lunch. Then we will transition into a service project of assembling senior care kits. Working collaboratively, we will pack items such as comfort supplies, handwritten notes, treats, and small gifts intended to brighten the day of seniors in our community.

This class introduces the fundamentals of sewing through guided learning. Participants will learn essential hand sewing and sewing machine techniques while creating an original project of your choice. All materials are provided during the class, such as fabrics, elastic, cord, buttons, velcro, ribbon, patterns, and sewing machines. This class is ideal for beginners or those looking to build confidence and practical sewing skills. Age 16+

Four fun Friday nights have been scheduled for Mahtomedi Middle & High School students to ski or snowboard at Trollhaugen. Spend time with friends and make new ones on the slopes. If a student has a season pass to Trollhaugen, select the discounted rate. Students with ski passes are responsible for getting their own lift ticket at the resort. A copy of the pass is required to be provided by Dec. 20 to stephanie.groff@isd832.net. Students MUST ride the bus both ways (all Ski & Snowboard Club members are committing to transportation to and from the ski resort provided by the program). Cost includes motor coach transportation to and from resorts, lift ticket, on-site supervision. Rental Equipment not included in cost. Registration Deadline is Dec. 1. No refund after registration deadline. No refunds issued for injuries or missed dates. Fees may be broken into two payments – with the first half due at registration, and the second half charged to the card on file before the first night. Young scientists will explore the magic of glitter and learn about light refraction by making a spinning, shining disco ball, crafting a shimmering suncatcher, and will even make a new slime each day. Come learn the Art of Sourdough! This is a very hands-on class where you get to go through all the initial steps of mixing the dough, discuss the whole process of how to make a loaf of bread, feed your new sourdough starter and learn how to maintain it, and get every question answered! Materials and ingredients are provided: a bowl, a jar with sourdough starter, a dough whisk, a spatula, flour, water, salt, a handout with access to a very informative guide that will help you throughout your sourdough journey, and you also get to taste some fresh bread and sourdough cookies throughout class! (all materials are YOURS to bring home). You have the choice to bring your own food scale or we will provide one for you to keep for an additional $15 fee. Get ready for a spooktacular after-school treat! In this hands-on cookie decorating class, students will design and decorate ten festive fall and spooky themed cookies to take home and show off! Using marshmallow fondant and royal icing, participants will learn basic decorating techniques while bringing festive designs to life. No experience needed. All materials provided.

Join us for a club where imagination takes center stage! Each week, we’ll dive into the world of storytelling through fun, interactive activities designed to spark your creativity. Together, we’ll explore the building blocks of great fiction (characters, plot, and setting) with a mix of games, prompts, and surprises. Reach into our mystery trick-or-treat buckets for unexpected story starters and create characters through improv and storytelling challenges. This club is your place to invent, share, and grow as a writer. No experience needed—just bring your curiosity and your imagination!

Learn the art of stained glass design and building with John Hanson, Owner of Longfellow Soap Company, who has been designing, creating, repairing, and restoring antique stained glass windows for 25 years. All tools and materials will be provided and each student will take home a small window. Safety glasses must be brought and used while cutting and grinding the glass. You will learn how to make, cut, and use patterns, cut and grind glass, tape your glass with copper foil, solder your glass, finish the edges with a zinc border, and add rings for hanging. He will also discuss how to use patina and polish to finish the panel. No experience needed. Students ages 12+ must be with a registered adult. Material fee of $30 due day of class payable to the instructor by cash or check. You must have sufficient arm and hand strength to cut and break glass.

Join us for a guided meditation class designed for both beginners and experienced meditators. Each session begins with a brief teaching on the evenings meditation focus and simple ways to bring meditation into everyday life. We then move into a quiet guided mediation to create stillness and inner connection, ending with a group mediation centered on love and collective healing for our world. Attendees are also invited to share reflections in a supportive space. This group class will help older adults regain strength, balance and flexibility to reduce falls and increase independence. Classes are taught by nationally certified fitness professionals, all trainers have been certified in the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (AFEP). The Arthritis Foundation certification indicates that your trainer has had additional training to help adapt exercises and movements to better accommodate those participants who have arthritis. Learn defensive and distraction-free driving! Mahtomedi Community Education partners with A+ Driving School to offer students 14-years or older 30 hours of Minnesota state-approved classroom instruction. The curriculum includes education in a variety of areas such as the financial impact of poor driving, at-fault accidents, liability, and others to illustrate to young drivers the consequences they could face when operating a vehicle. Easy make-up classes are available! Once you’ve finished the 30 hours of classroom and received your blue slip, you are eligible to take the 40-question permit test on one of the computers in the office at A+ Driving School in White Bear Lake. Welcome to Summer Band! All 5th graders who registered for 6th grade Band at Mahtomedi Middle School (2026-27) are strongly encouraged to take part in this summer opportunity. This camp is also for any students 7th or 8th grade who are starting an instrument for the first time. Students will be learning the beginning basics of their instrument and will be working with a professional musician and teacher on their instrument in instrument-specific sessions. These sessions will be used to prepare your student for playing on their first day of band class. Skills they will learn include, but are not limited to: instrument assembly, proper posture/hand placement, embouchure formation, breath support, warm-up skills, reading notes/rhythms, and instrument care. Students will attend classes with the same instruments, as different instruments require different instruction for many skills.
