Apostle Islands Trip - NEWDay TripsJoin us September 8-10th for a trip to The Apostle Islands! On Tuesday, September 8th we will arrive in Bayfield, WI for The Apostle Islands “Grand Tour” Cruise takes you on a narrated, informative 55-mile scenic cruise. Throughout this memorable cruise, you'll pass extraordinary natural scenery, beautiful historic Raspberry Lighthouse and Devils Island Lighthouse. See standing rocks, extensive sea caves, and marine wildlife. After the cruise, we will check into the Legendary Waters Resort. The resort is built on the shores of Lake Superior with an indoor swimming pool and fitness center. It is located adjacent to the casino. Lunch and dinner are included. Wednesday, after an included breakfast, the Madeline Island Ferry will take you to the picturesque town of LaPointe on Madeline Island. It is the largest of the Apostle Islands and you will enjoy a tour of the island from a local guide. Hear about The Apostle Islands and how they were named for the twelve apostles! Then after an included lunch at the Pub Restaurant, we will visit the Madeline Island Historical Museum. In the evening, we will return to Bayfield and indulge in a tasting at the Bayfield Winery, who began fermenting their first batch of wine in the fall of 1995. This evening's (included) dinner is at Legendary Waters Resort. Thursday, after an included breakfast. we will meet a step-on-guide and hear about the historic village of Bayfield and visit one of the apple orchards. At the Old Rittenhouse Inn amidst antiques and fireplaces, you will have an included Victorian luncheon. This is a Queen Anne-style mansion restored to its original splendor with distinctive touches. Barre BasicsFitness & RecreationLooking for a fitness class that is fun, effective, and close to home? Barre Basics is a group exercise class being offered through Community Education. This class offers a wide variety of low-impact exercises that combine elements of ballet, Pilates, yoga and strength training. Barre focuses on engaging specific muscles until they reach fatigue, followed by stretching to create long, lean, and toned muscles. Barre is a great way to build total body strength, improve flexibility, and relieve stress. This class is open to all fitness levels, with modifications available to help you safely perform exercises. Please bring a yoga mat, resistance band, and a light set of hand weights (2 lb or similar). Women Who Walk - FREEFitness & RecreationWalking has proven benefits for physical and mental health - and it's even better when the walk includes members of the community!Join for a weekly walk on Thursdays at 9 AM. Walks will begin at the District Education Center, Veteran's Memorial Park or another Mahtomedi location. Each week's starting point will be communicated via email. *All dates are subject to change and will be communicated via email to people who are registered.Walks are typically 45-60 minutes, with the option to shorten or extend the walk. The goal is to make the walk accessible for different levels of endurance. Routes may vary based on group preference and weather. Friendly dogs are welcome! Join us and see for yourself how Tai Chi can enhance your fitness, increase your sense of tranquility, and elevate you to new levels of vitality and well being. The 24 form Yang style of Tai Chi will be the focus of our class. The Yang style is the most widely practiced style in the world, and affords students and practitioners innumerable health, wellness, and vitality benefits. This style can be learned in eight weeks of training and instruction. This accessibility makes the style appealing to a broad range of practitioners, allowing individuals of all skill levels to engage and benefit from its continued practice without the pressure of advancing through multiple levels. This can foster a more inclusive environment, encouraging personal growth and enjoyment of the art form. Strength and Balance (adults 55+)55+This group class will help older adults regain strength, balance and flexibility to reduce falls and increase independence. Classes are taught by nationally certified fitness professionals, all trainers have been certified in the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (AFEP). The Arthritis Foundation certification indicates that your trainer has had additional training to help adapt exercises and movements to better accommodate those participants who have arthritis. This is a very hands-on class where you get to go through all the initial steps of mixing the dough, discuss the whole process of how to make a loaf of bread, feed your new sourdough starter and learn how to maintain it, and get every question answered! Materials and ingredients are provided: a bowl, a jar with sourdough starter, a dough whisk, a spatula, flour, water, salt, a handout with access to a very informative guide that will help you throughout your sourdough journey, and you also get to taste some fresh bread and sourdough cookies throughout class! (all materials are YOURS to bring home). You have the choice to bring your own food scale or we will provide one for you to keep for an additional $15 fee. Fire up your core, increase your flexibility and strength in your entire body as you flow through a series of dynamic movements that will restore balance and proper body alignment. Mat Pilates is a form of exercises that can be modified for all to participate. The key components are: incorporating and understanding the importance of your breath, increasing awareness and improving balance and posture, strengthening and toning the muscles in the body, with a strong emphasis on the core. Pottery Workshop: Empty Bowl Event (adult with student ages 5+) - NEWArts, Crafts & CulinaryFamilies, friends, and individuals (ages 5+) are invited to gather in the Mahtomedi High School Pottery Studio for a hands-on, heart-filled pottery experience. Together, participants will learn how to create handmade ceramic bowls that will be donated to the Empty Bowls event taking place later this winter. Empty Bowls is a global movement that uses art and food to spark conversation and raise awareness about food insecurity. At an Empty Bowls event, guests make a monetary donation, choose a bowl created by you or other local artists, and enjoy a simple meal, serving as a reminder that many neighbors face empty bowls every day. During this pottery session, you will explore the basics of working with clay, shape their own bowls, and experience the joy of creating something meaningful together. While you won’t take your bowl home, your creation will play a direct role in supporting a charitable cause and helping others in need. This unique event blends creativity, community, and compassion, which offers the chance to learn a new artistic skill and make a lasting impact through art. 55+ Defensive Driving Class55+If you are 55 or older, save money on your car insurance premiums and become a better driver. Minnesota law requires that insurance companies offer a 10% reduction on auto insurance for three years if you complete a state-approved defensive driving course taught by professional, certified instructors. Virtual and in-person classes are available. No driving or test required. At the end of the course, you will receive a certificate of completion to provide to your insurance agent. *If you choose a virtual session, there are materials you will need to pick up at the Mahtomedi District Education Center or request for it to be mailed to you prior to your virtual course. Kayak Full Moon Adventure - NEWFitness & RecreationJoin us for a guided Full Moon Adventure kayaking experience on a kayak friendly lake! This two- hour experience, guided by SilverFinn Kayaking, begins with a relaxed paddle at sunset and continues into the evening as participants enjoy the peaceful transition to moonlight on the water. The experience is designed to be both recreational and restorative, offering participants an opportunity to connect with nature, enjoy local waterways, and engage in a unique community-based outdoor activity. Please arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign waivers and select your equipment. This program is suitable for beginners and recreational paddlers. All instruction and safety guidance will be provided on-site. All equipment provided includes kayaks, paddles, U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket, and waterproof cases for phones and keys.
