The Art of Soapmaking - NEWArts, Crafts & CulinaryDuring this demonstration and lecture format class, you will explore the art and science of traditional soap making using the cold process method, a technique that has existed for thousands of years. John Hanson, Owner/Maker of Longfellow Soap Company, will walk you through each step of the process, explaining how simple natural ingredients are transformed into handmade soap. Due to the use of lye, this class is presented in a demonstration format for safety, allowing you to learn so you can confidently recreate the process at home. Each participant will receive a copy of a comprehensive teaching manual to take home. This includes an ingredient list, recommended equipment, recipes, step-by-step instructions, and trusted sources for purchasing essential oils, ingredients, and supplies. The Page Turner Challenge (completed grades 5-7) - NEWAcademics & LearningThe Page Turners Challenge is a summer literacy program with author visits, challenges and games, group discussions, incentives and prizes, and four included books. Open to students who have completed grades 5–7, this program features five engaging evening sessions as well as a final book battle in the fall. Students will receive a book each session, to read before we meet again, and keep! During the following session, students will participate in an icebreaker, small and large group facilitated conversations about the text, interact in an author visit and discussion, enjoy a snack, and engage in fun competitions and challenges with incentives. This program is held at Mahtomedi Middle School, but there will also be opportunities to earn more incentives and extend learning at Wildwood Library! This program was designed to motivate students to read deeply and think critically while building a sense of community around books. At the end of the summer we will have a final book battle involving trivia questions from all of the texts, interactive games, and big prizes! We will also have a book swap during the final battle. Join us for fun, author visits, prizes, and summer learning! *We will need some parent/guardian volunteers to lead discussion groups. Please indicate your interest upon registration. Players will learn/advance their basic fundamental skills (serving, passing, setting and hitting) with an emphasis on maximum quality contacts, and then incorporate those skills into fun activities and competitions that build a higher understanding of the game. Players will be grouped according to skill level, to allow them to be successful no matter what their previous level of experience is. Volleyball - Girls Summer Program Middle School (completed grades 5-7)VolleyballImprove your volleyball skills! Two separate 1-week session camps will feature instruction focusing on developing volleyball knowledge and progressing in the fundamental skills of passing, setting, hitting, and serving. Emphasis will be on maximum quality contacts, and to train for future high school volleyball participation. Please note: if you are in 5th grade and BRAND NEW to volleyball, the Elementary Camp would be the best fit. If you are a 5th grader with prior experience in the youth camp or club, then the middle school camp would be the best fit. Cost includes a T-shirt. Women Who Walk - FREEFitness & RecreationWalking has proven benefits for physical and mental health - and it's even better when the walk includes members of the community!Join for a weekly walk on Thursdays at 9 AM. Walks will begin at the District Education Center, Veteran's Memorial Park or another Mahtomedi location. Each week's starting point will be communicated via email. *All dates are subject to change and will be communicated via email to people who are registered.Walks are typically 45-60 minutes, with the option to shorten or extend the walk. The goal is to make the walk accessible for different levels of endurance. Routes may vary based on group preference and weather. Friendly dogs are welcome! Young Explorers - Drop OffEarly Childhood Family Education (ECFE)Little Explorers is an opportunity for children to become more confident and comfortable in a classroom setting. Children come to class without their caregiver and spend time with a licensed early education teacher. They practice skills such as sharing, problem solving, and learning through play.
